Multi-award-winning Andy's Bar in Monaghan Town has just been crowned the Best Business in the Friends of Breastfeeding 2024 Awards. The gastro-pub, which is likely better known for its cocktails and food, has been pioneering breastfeeding ever since one of the owners' wives breastfed their three children
Then, during National Breastfeeding Week last October a local woman asked Kevin Redmond to put a sticker on the front door of his pub on Market Street. Kevin said he had already been actively promoting breastfeeding in the bar because he had always been "astounded" by the benefits of breastfeeding since he and his wife pursued it.
Andy thought nothing more about that encounter with the local woman until last week, he received a phone call to say that Andy's Bar was one of five finalists in the national breastfeeding in business awards. Andy's have since been crowned national winners and Kevin will continue to promote the benefits of breastfeeding. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show earlier, Kevin said: "I'd advise expectant mothers listening to this interview to go and maybe do a little bit of research. Those first feeds, the colostrum is so, so important. On Sunday, I met one of the neighbours, a farmer, and he said 'I heard about that award Kevin. Y'know that whenever calves are born if they don't get the colostrum they're not the same. You can really tell the ones that got it and the ones that didn't'. Here's a farm,er telling me and y'know what it's the same for humans",
