Alone launched its Winter campaign ‘Share the Warmth’ this week and Joanna Donnelly, Met Eireann weather presenter, has been appointed ambassador of the initiative.
The organisation has seen a sharp increase in demand for its services as the number of older people living alone and in poverty continues to rise.
The campaign is asking all of us to share our warmth this Christmas - the warmth of friendship and companionship as well as financial support so that older people can be helped and supported through the "spiralling cost of living".
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Ms Donnelly said that just one phone call can help to break the cycle of isolation. She added that as the cold snap draws in, it it important to call to elderly or vulnerable neighbours and friends and ensure they are warm and supported.
"If you think there is someone who lives nearby and they are afraid to put on the heating you can actually call Alone yourself with those concerns. Let them know about your concerns because Alone is there and is well equipped to deal with matters," said Ms Donnelly.
