262 claims involving uninsured motorists were dealt with by the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland in the Northern Sound region over the last five years.
The Bureau is a non-profit organisation specialising in compensating victims of road traffic accidents caused by uninsured and unidentified vehicles.
Over the 5 year period, the average motorist in Cavan and Monaghan will have contributed between €150 - €175 to cover costs of uninsured drivers through their motor insurance policies.
In 2022 there were a total of 155 claims involving uninsured drivers in Cavan, during last year there were a total of 23 claims in Cavan, the same total as 2021.
There were 107 claims involving uninsured drivers in Monaghan last year, In 2022 there were a total of 16 claims in Monaghan which was up by 23% on the comparison for 2021.
There were 188 thousand uninsured private vehicles on Irish roads last year. The figures for 2022 also show the number of claims received by the Motor Insurers Bureau grew in 22 of the 26 counties in Ireland.
