13,600 people smoked daily across the Northern Sound region according to recent CSO figures released. In Cavan, more than 7,900 people smoked daily in April 2022 which was 10% of the population, compared with 9% nationally. And in Monaghan more than 5,700 people smoked daily in April 2022 which was 9% of the population.
Just over 3,300 people smoked occasionally in Cavan while over 15,400 people had given up smoking. In Monaghan just over 2,600 people smoked occasionally while almost 11,800 people had given up smoking. More than 41,800 people in Monaghan and 49,900 people in Cavan stated they never smoked, while nationally, 60% of the population never smoked. The number of males in both counties who smoked daily was much greater than the number of females.
