A former railway station house in Ballinamore has been brought back into use for the community following a major regeneration project. The railway station opened on the site in 1887 as a junction of the Cavan to Leitrim line but the line closed in 1959.
The building was then used to house St Felim's secondary school until 2014 with the diocese of Kilmore donating the site and station buildings to Leitrim County Council where it was taken on to restore and repurpose the building. The Junction Hub has taken an old railway station and transformed it into a school of art, enterprise hub and youth centre.
Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys officially opened Junction Ballinamore on Friday last. The Junction Project promotes the regeneration of Ballinamore town and surrounding areas by restoring two protected buildings and a derelict site at the former Station House.
The local minister said it also provides opportunities for employment, digital technology and youth services, adding people from surrounding areas will hugely benefit from this development. She said it was full steam ahead for many generations to come for this former railway station.
