Speculation now turns to who will contest the general election for Fine Gael in Monaghan.
The Cavan - Monaghan Fine Gael convention was due to take place tonight but has been postponed to be re-scheduled for Friday evening.
Outgoing sitting TD and Minister Heather Humphreys confirmed the date this morning during an interview on the Joe Finnegan Show. Minister Humphreys announced her plans to step away from politics over the weekend leaving a sure Fine Gael seat in this constituency up for grabs.
Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, T P O'Reilly was to run as a Cavan-based candidate alongside seasoned politician and deputy leader of Fine Gael in the upcoming elections. Over the weekend, the Taoiseach said his party still planned to run two candidates.
All six Fine Gael Councillors, Cllr David Maxwell, Cllr Aidan Campbell, Cllr Sean Gilliland, Cllr Pauric Clerkin, Cllr Richard Truell and Cllr Peter Conlon have said they all would consider putting their name forward to be run in the upcoming election. Philip Kelly who is the chairperson of Fine Gael in Cavan and Monaghan says the convention is this Friday night in the Kilmore Hotel at 8pm.
