Aldi has applied for planning permission for a Deposit Return Scheme at its Cavan store. The supermarket giant has applied in recent days to Cavan County Council for the recycling facility located at its Dublin Rd location in the town.
The planning application follows the Government announced the introduction of a Deposit Return Scheme for single use plastics and metal drinks containers, which is due to go live in February 2024.
In anticipation of the scheme, Aldi has lodged a number of planning applications, the Cavan store will be able to hold up to 6,000 plastic bottles and or aluminium drink cans before being emptied.
Under the scheme, when a customer purchases single use drink containers, a deposit amount will be placed on the item. This deposit amount will be returned to the customer when the container is returned through the kiosk.
Aldi say this scheme will encourage a sustainable circular economy and contribute to goals of Ireland's Climate Action Plan.
