Aldi have been given the green light to start work on a new store for Cootehill. The new €6.5m store will open in County Cavan in 2024.
They were granted planning permission for the 1,351 sq m store by An Bord Pleanála following months of campaigning by local people determined to bring the discount supermarket to north east Cavan. Managing Director of Buying and Services at ALDI Ireland, Colin Breslin said: "Today is a great day for the people of Cootehill." He said Aldi are "particularly delighted for those people who have campaigned tirelessly and signed petitions supporting our efforts to come to the town."
The Cootehill store will be powered by 100% green electricity. In addition, Cootehill shoppers will also benefit from four electric vehicle charging points at the new store along with 10 bicycle rack stands.
Local TD Brendan Smith said he welcomed the new addition for Cavan shoppers. "Cootehill is a very enterprising town with top class retail stores at present catering for all household needs and is a true market town," he said before adding: "The experience in other towns is that a new brand brings additional business and helps big time in encouraging people to shop locally. I welcome the decision of An Bord Pleánala to approve the Aldi application for a new store in Cootehill." This approval not only enables the provision of the Aldi store but it will facilitate the opening of a back road in the town which is needed to provide access to the rear of premises in Market Street."

The new store will be in the town adjacent to all other premises and it will help to deal with some dereliction problems in that particular area as well”, stated Deputy Brendan Smith."
