Councillor Áine Smith was officially co-opted onto Cavan County Council yesterday afternoon. The Fianna Fáil representative will occupy the seat vacated by her late father, Sean Smith and will represent the Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District.
Speaking at her first sitting of Cavan County Council, Cllr Smith thanked her fellow councillors for their support, adding that she was "grateful" for the nomination.
Cllr Smith described her co-option onto the council as a "bitter sweet moment" and that she wished circumstances were different, following her father's passing at the start of this year.
She added that it was a "great honour" to sit in the chair where her father worked as a local politician for over 40 years and that she will work to support families across Cavan as "best as possible."
"I will work to the best of my ability to serve the interests of the local districts," explained Cllr Smith. "I look forward to working alongside my fellow colleagues, I believe that in any walk of life we get more work done by working together."
