Aine Smith, the daughter of the late Cllr Sean Smith has been co-opted onto the seat left vacant by her father. She will officially take over the role next Monday and while admitting that she has 'big boots to fill', the east Cavan woman is determined to put her best forward.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Ms Smith highlighted how she served a long and enlightening 'apprentice' during her father's 44-year tenure as a local area representative. She says health, education and local infrastructure will top her list of priorities when she is welcomed to the local authority in seven days time.
Ms Smith added that she is also delighted to become the fifth female representative on Cavan County Council. "I think it's wonderful to see for younger woman and girls, that they can see that women can take up these roles and that girls can see that women have a voice. Long may it last and long may it continue and may many more women get the chance to sit on councils and be represented in the Dail and Seanad," she said.
