The Agriculture Minister says he'll engage in solutions to protect the local mushroom sector from peat shortages.
The harvesting of horticultural peat ended in Ireland in 2019 due to licencing laws, and reserves have now been exhausted.
Last week it was revealed that up to 4,000 tonnes of peat was imported in Ireland from Latvia, something Minister Charlie McConalogue agrees doesn't make sense.
One of the main uses of horticultural peat is for growing mushrooms.
Minister McConalogue told Shannonside Northern Sound that he's very aware of the impact shortages are having.
