The Agriculture Minister has written to his fellow ministers to try to tighten up laws around controlling dogs. At the moment, three government departments, along with local authorities, are responsible for the policing of dogs.
The Department of Agriculture wants to improve coordination and people's safety, after a young boy was attacked and injured by a pit bull terrier in Co. Wexford recently. Minister Charlie McConalogue says they're trying to ensure that incident won't be repeated.
"There are steps that we could take on how to manage dangerous dogs and the safeguards that are in place. Obviously, the situation in Wexford was absolutely horrifying; this it is something that we want to make sure at Government level - in terms of policy, funding and enforcement - that every effort is being made on.
