Cavan County Council has signed a Section 85 Agreement with Leitrim County Council for the purpose of bringing the Greenway between Sligo and Enniskillen to a construction stage.
According to Cllr John Paul Feeley, an "extensive round" of public consultation will now take place involving detailed engagement with landowners and the wider community to select the final route of the Greenway and then develop the plans to bring the matter through to planning.
Cllr Feeley said this work is part of the Council's overall plan to join the pieces of existing greenway near Cavan Town, Ballyconnell and Belturbet into a network with adjoining counties - with additional plans in the east of the county around Kingscourt.
He also revealed that the timeframe for this next phase will be eighteen to twenty four months at which point the project will be ready to be shovel ready and ready for capital funding.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Feeley added that from a "tourism" point of view, the Sligo to Enniskillen Greenway will be of huge benefit to a section of Cavan, in particular the village of Blacklion:
