Africa Day took place on the 25th of May and a special event is taking place in Monaghan town to mark the occasion today, May 27th.
Proceedings kick off at 2pm in St Joseph's Pastoral Centre and everyone is being invited to come along and join in the celebrations with members of the local African community who have chosen Co Monaghan as their home from home.
Luciano Gungo, the Teach na Daoine representative of the African Community in Monaghan told Shannonside Northern Sound that the day marks the 1963 declaration that brought unity to African States.
He says the day will present an opportunity for the African community to extend the hand of friendship across Co Monaghan.
Luciano added that he arrived in Monaghan 12 years and in that time, the area has become his second home.
"This day is a day for everyone, for Africans and for friends of Africans. We have neighbours now, we're integrated, our kids are at school here, and it's a chance for all of us to come together and to make Monaghan a better place to live".
