The Government must act to make Sun Protection Factors more affordable to stem the increase in skin cancer cases in Ireland. The Irish Cancer Society say approximately 13,000 people are being diagnosed each year, with the number expected to double by 2040.
They're warning people if they notice any changes in their skin, to seek medical advice immediately. Director of Advocacy at the Irish Cancer Society. Rachel Morrow says people here are not aware of skin cancer risks.
"Research from the Irish Cancer Society shows that people aren't as aware of the risks of skin damage as we want them to be. We found last year that one in three people state that they are not at all worried about sun burn in Ireland.
"So, regarding sun protection behaviours, the Irish Cancer Society really wants people to take those precautions in the sun and make sure they stand the best chance of not being diagnosed with skin cancer in the future," she added.
