The Abbeylands project in Cavan town has been given the green light after members of the Cavan/Belturbet Municipal District voted in part 8 planning approval for phase 1 of the project.
The plan - which is set to rejuvenate the area - will see the development of a new multicultural space and public plaza; a business remote working hub; and a new community centre. Recreation space will also be provided for and the heritage of the area will be to the fore as the walls of ancient graveyard are set to be stabilised.
Cllr John Paul Feeley says the development - which will create a link to Main Street, Bridge Street and Abbey Street - is one of "utmost importance" for the town and will attract 20,000 visitors annually. He added how there has been "huge investment" in the project and construction should begin before the end of this year.
