Monaghan Senator, Robbie Gallagher has highlighted this week, the need for electric vehicle (EV) charging points. He says the lack of the necessary infrastructure is negatively impacting purchasing power which it comes to local people making the switch.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator Gallagher highlighted, how recent figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) revealed that 18,458 EVs were registered in the first seven months of 2023 compared to 11,175 for the same period in 2022.
Meanwhile, out of the 27,148 new cars registered last month, 4,161 were electric. Senator Gallagher added that all publicly available EV charging facilities should be listed on a website or app, enabling users to access real-time updates on their availability and charging capacity.
"People are apprehensive about undertaking a long journey because they are not too sure what the battery life will be, how far they will get and where they will get their vehicle charged," he continued.
"So, I think there needs to be a good body of work done there so that the number of charging points along our network of roads can be increased and that people can clearly know where the charging points are along their journey."
