Minister Darragh O'Brien was in Co Monaghan earlier today.

The Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien was in Co Monaghan earlier today to announce the delivery and purposed delivery of social and affordable homes in the county. Monaghan County Council intends to develop an additional 50 social homes along with 20 affordable purchase houses at Latlorcan under design build contracts using modern methods of construction.

30 social homes were officially delivered today in Castleblayney alongside 7 in Ballybay. The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O'Brien said a numbers of these estates in the area were ghost estates but now will be completed and offer homes to local people. Minister O'Brien says supplying good quality social homes alongside affordable homes.

Meanwhile, Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, David Maxwell said this is a great way to make use of the land that is council owned close to the centre of Monaghan. Monaghan County Council acquired 8 Hectares (20 acres) of land and 17 houses, part of an unfinished housing development, at Latlorcan in 2017 and arranged the construction of 43 social houses completed in 2019 under Rebuilding Ireland and the sale of 6 serviced sites, on 29 November 2023 an additional 5 serviced sites were advertised for sale at Latlorcan.

The remainder of the land at Latlorcan is to be developed to provide additional social and affordable purchase housing. Monaghan County Council intends to develop an additional 50 social houses and circa 20 affordable purchase houses at Latlorcan under design build contracts using modern methods of construction. Geda Construction Ltd submitted a proposal to construct 30 houses on site adjacent to an existing estate in Coill Darach Castleblayney. Proposal was assessed, recommended and funding requested from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the homes were officially handed over.

While in Ballybay, Monaghan County Council acquired 0.59Hectares (1.46 acres) from 3 separate landowners in 2019. Part of the site was used by Municipal District to provide carparking. Housing Section used remaining 0.28 hectares (0.71acres) for the provision of social housing, to complete the unfinished brownfield site, demolish existing derelict dwellings and develop 7 social houses on the remaining 0.27 hectares. This project is a combination of town centre renewal addressing derelict properties and unfinished housing development.
