360 people in Cavan and around 280 people in Monaghan were diagnosed with cancer last year. The figures were released by charity Irish Cancer Society who also pointed out that one in two Irish people will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Despite Ireland having the third highest cancer deaths in Western Europe, the charity says many cancer patients aren't getting the care, treatment and support they deserve.
With many patients stuck on waiting lists for referrals, tests and treatment. And others struggling with the financial burden of cancer, the society is calling on the people of Cavan and Monaghan to stand with cancer patients by signing their petition urging the next government to invest in cancer services, medicines and trials, and help patients with the cost of cancer.
So far, just 26 people from Monaghan and Cavan have signed the petition at cancer.ie/petition.
