Six poultry farm across Cavan and Monaghan have been identified after a salmonella outbreak emerged towards the end of last week. Rigorous tests by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and the Department of Agriculture have prevented further contamination of poultry meat.
As a result, consumers are being advised there is no safety issue and meat is safe to cook and eat. IFA Ulster/North Leinster Chairman, Frank Brady, told Northern Sound today that high standards around food in Ireland meant the source of the bacteria was discovered quickly.
He added that salmonella has not entered the food chain since it was identified and contained, and last week's contaminated products have been recalled. "The health of the consumer is what matters because if we don't have the consumer, we don't have anyone to buy our products.
"To reassure all of the people who are buying chicken - there is no issue with chicken at all. All of the farms, so far, have been identified and every other farm is being tested before the animal leaves the site. At this moment in time, everything is under control," said Mr Brady.
