Recent visitors to Monaghan Town for an event were hard-pushed to find an hotel in Monaghan so had to stay in County Armagh instead.

A lack of hotel beds in Monaghan Town was a problem during a recent civic event. The issue was raised at a Monaghan County Council meeting based on anectdotal reports from tourists to the town for the national Pride of Place Awards at the start of the month.

Cllr Aiden Campbell said some visitors he spoke with complained at one of the events laid on for the awards night in Monaghan Town, that they were hard-pushed to find an hotel for the night and had to stay in County Armagh because there were no rooms available in Monaghan. For the first time in the competition's 22-year history, the Pride of Place Awards was hosted in County Monaghan, with Oram outright winners in their category. There were 600 invited guests in Monaghan Town for the awards night on Saturday, 2nd November.

Monaghan County Council statistics state there are 524 Fáilte Ireland-approved bed nights in the Monaghan Municipal District and approximately 46 non-approved. Cllr Campbell said the figures just don't stack up:
