The development of 45 social housing units in Bailieborough was given the green light at yesterday's local municipal district meeting. Approval for the development was proposed by Cllr Sarah O'Reilly and seconded by Cllr Paddy McDonald.
Cllr O'Reilly told Northern Sound that the initial plan at the site in Beckscourt was for 62 houses. She said smaller social housing developments provided for better social cohesion.
Cllr O'Reilly added that with the current housing crisis, the need for housing locally, is great, and Cavan County Council has struck the correct balance with the development.
"I am happy to see there were no objections and no submissions from the public. I want to thank John Wilson, Eoin Doyle, and the housing team in Cavan County Council for working with Councillors, local residents, and private property owners on this.
"We must also acknowledge and thank the local community for their cooperation and excellent communication with local representatives and their openness and willingness to work with Cavan County Council - they must be highly commended.
"I am particularly pleased to see that the local authority has looked favourably on my request to allow for a community site for future development and I am delighted to see this area is included in the plan in front of us here today," she said.
