40 million euro has been set aside for a new North-South Research Programme.
The announcement this week was made as part of the Shared Island Fund and it's hoped it will help to build and sustain links between colleges and institutions north and south.
The news has been welcomed by local TD Brendan Smith, who has called for greater co-operation between Cavan and Monaghan Institutes and their counterparts in the north like those in Omagh and Enniskillen.
He told the Dáil this week that further education is valuable for many people, particularly those from disadvantaged areas.
Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris says the fund has great potential:
