380 vacant social homes were brought back into use in Cavan since 2014 at a cost of €4.5 million to refurbish them. The return of the houses into the property market was brought about under the government's Voids Programme.
Housing Minister, Darragh O'Brien praised Cavan County Council on their work with his department in bringing the properties back to life for social housing. "I commend Cavan County Council for bringing these homes back on stream into active use in 2023. Their efforts, will make a real difference in the lives of over 2,400 households," Minister O'Brien said.
The refurbishment and return of vacant homes on to the property market helps to reduce pressure on existing housing stock, increase supply and provide much needed homes for people, the minister said. The refurbishment of these unoccupied social homes has a positive impact on communities, his statement added.
