Over 250 pubs have closed their doors permanently since 2005 in the Shannonside Northern Sound region. Figures from the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland show Roscommon is the county with the 2nd highest number of closures in the country.
The latest data breaks down the number of pubs that closed in each county between 2005 and last year. According to the release, Roscommon has one of the highest closure rates nationally, with 77 pubs closing between 2005 and 2022.
12 of those closed between 2020 and last year in the Covid-19 decline. The next highest in the region is Westmeath, with 53 pub closures listed. 40 pubs in Leitrim closed their doors in the 17 year period while 38 closed in Cavan.
In Monaghan, 29 pubs closed their doors between 2005 and last year. While in Longford, 30 public houses permanently closed with four of those closing during the Covid-19 pandemic. Nationally, almost 2,000 pubs closed between 2005 and last year.
