A meeting of Cavan County Council heard this month how there is a 36% refusal rate of local authority housing in the county. Cllr Patricia Walsh says she is shocked by the findings and cannot understand why the figures are so high given the housing crisis that has developed across the country.
She highlighted how local area representatives across Co Cavan are inundated with requests from local people for homes. Cllr Walsh explained that there are varying reasons for people refusing a house that's offered to them.
She added that Cavan County Council has spent a lot of money - in recent months - bringing its housing stock back on stream. "If people are refusing these housing after all the money that has been spent bringing them back into stock, then you have to ask questions.
"Why are they not taking these houses when there are people who would jump at the chance of getting one of these houses. On a daily basis, myself and other public representatives we have people ringing us in dire straights looking for houses. And I am shocked over that very high refusal rate," Cllr Walsh said.
