248 abandoned or stray dogs were admitted to the Monaghan dog pound or MSPCA shelter during 2019.
Meanwhile, 53 abandoned or stray dogs have been admitted as of May of this year.
Last year, 248 abandoned or stray dogs were admitted to the Monaghan County Council Dog Pound in Lisdoonan and to the MSPCA Shelter in Killydonagh, on behalf of Monaghan County Council.
This figure is distinct from the numbers of dogs that were surrendered by their owners to the Dog Pound, 129 in total in 2019.
47 of these dogs were later reclaimed.
Council figures also indicate that five dogs were put to sleep in 2019.
Of these five dogs, three were strays that were dead on admission - two were shot worrying sheep and one was killed on the road.
Meanwhile, the other two dogs that were put to sleep were surrendered dogs that had been aggressive or had bit someone.
No stray or abandoned dogs were put to sleep at the Dog Pound.
As of the end of May, 53 abandoned or stray dogs have been admitted to the dog pound or MSPCA shelter, while 52 had been surrendered, with nine being reclaimed.
