A Cavan councillor has raised his concerns over the number of people who are failing their Driver Theory Test. Cllr Trevor Smith says the matter must be addressed and he has called on the Minister for Transport to have the Test reviewed.
According to Cllr Smith, the high rate of test failures is having a "negative impact" on young people across rural communities who are reliant on their drivers licence for job opportunities. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Smith said people are coming to him to highlight the fact they have failed the Test several times.
He added, one person he knows has failed the test on 15 occasions and that seems incomprehensible to him. "That is totally unfair and we need to get to the bottom of this and find out what is going on here. It's a huge cost to the individual and to the parents.
"And, these people need their drivers licence to get to work or college. So, it's a double edge sword because it costs money and then it's stopping them from getting to where they need to be," said Cllr Smith.
