The Minister for Justice has this morning confirmed that a domestic violence refuge will be established in Cavan and Monaghan. Speaking to Northern Sound she said it was not okay that several counties were currently without a refuge.
She pointed to the €9m secured by her department in the recent Budget and highlighted how it has been specifically earmarked for the provision of safe spaces for victims of domestic abuse. The Minister says that money will be used to provide shelter in the Cavan Monaghan region.
She added how the structures to achieve this were now in place and her priority is to provide necessary services for people who need them. "I would love if this was done yesterday; these things unfortunately take longer than we would like.
"But it is an absolute priority for me and I want to assure people that it is going to happen. We have the money and the commitment right across Government so we just need to keep working at it," she added.
