Over 2,000 new homes have been built in Monaghan and Cavan since July 2020.
Local Fianna Fáil TD, Deputy Brendan Smith has revealed the number of new homes that have been built locally over the past four years. The statistics, compiled from Fianna Fáil's Housing For All plan, also show that from January to June 2024, 548 homes have been commenced in Monaghan and Cavan, up from 295 in the same period in 2023.
Commenting on the figures, Deputy Smith stated: "Since we entered government in 2020, our top priority has been doing everything we can to help people to afford to buy or rent a home. He said we are using every lever at our disposal to tackle the housing crisis and the statistics show that progress is being made.
The Help to Buy Scheme is helping first time buyers in Monaghan and Cavan get their first home. The Rent Tax Credit is helping renters with the cost of rent, with over 9,000 Rent Tax Credit claims made across Monaghan and Cavan from 2022 to 2024.
"We are also increasing supply of social homes, over 700 social homes delivered in Monaghan and Cavan from 2020-23. Supply is the key to addressing our housing needs and it is increasing. Nationwide, 33,784 new homes commenced construction in the first six months of this year. In addition to new homes, we want to tackle vacant and derelict buildings. Monaghan and Cavan County Councils were allocated €5m under URDF to tackle long term vacancy and dereliction within towns. Almost €13m has been allocated in Housing Adaption Grants."
