There are 20 people waiting on trolleys at Cavan General Hospital this morning. According to figures released on the daily INMO trolley watch database today, all 20 of those on trolleys in the local hospital are in the Emergency Department. There are currently no patients waiting on trolleys in any other ward in Cavan General.
Nationwide, 424 people in total are waiting for beds with 305 of those on trolleys in EDs and the remaining 119 in wards elsewhere in the country's hospitals. The figure of 20 for Cavan is unusually high. On Monday, Northern Sound reported 16 people were on trolleys with management describing the situation as "in escalation".
At that time, the public were advised to explore alternatives to the ED. Cavan County Councillor John Paul Feeley says the HSE needs to ensure proper staff resourcing at the hospital: "I am very conscious of the pressure staff at Cavan General are under and I think the HSE need to look at additional resources for that in the period before the new facilities are put in place," Cllr Feeley told Northern Sound, "Whilst they are welcome and forthcoming in the future, we can't wait until the new capital work is done before additional staff are provided to ensure there are no inordinate delays for people presenting themselves at the emergency department."
