Almost 200 complaints were made against Gardaí in the Cavan/Monaghan/Louth division by members of the public last year.
The figures are contained in a new report by the Garda Ombudsman.
GSOC’s primary responsibility is to deal with complaints made by members of the public concerning the conduct of members of the Garda Síochána. A total of 1,577 complaints were opened in 2023, a 14% decrease on the 2022 figure of 1,826. 70 of these complaints were against Gardaí in Cavan and Monaghan and 121 in Louth. The most common reason for complaints related to 'Customer Service', the conduct of Gardaí during arrests, and the conduct of Gardaí whilst carrying out investigations. Two Section 102 referrals were also made to GSOC last year from the Cavan-Monaghan area. These referrals reference that the conduct of a member of the Gardaí may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person. The circumstances could range from death following Garda contact, death during arrest, and road traffic incidents.
Overall, complaints against Gardaí reduced by 14% between 2022 and 2023.
