794 students in Monaghan and 930 in Cavan will sit the Leaving Certificate exam this morning while 57 in Monaghan and 95 in Cavan will take the Leaving Cert applied exams.
1,119 students in Cavan and 894 in Monaghan will sit the Junior Certificate.
Nationally, more than 131 thousand students will begin their State examinations over the next two weeks.
This year marks the full return of externally delivered examinations for all candidates since the year before the Covid-19 pandemic.
The numbers expected to sit exams this year has increased by 6 percent compared to the last time a full set of examinations was run in 2019.
The Minister for Education Norma Foley is wishing students well this morning and commended them for showing such resilience during the pandemic.
"They have shown tremendous resilience, focus and determination over these past two years," she added.
"They have been an especially challenging two years but students have gotten on with the work to hand.
"Today, they begin their exams and they have the opportunity to showcase all the work and effort they have put in.
"I wish them well."
