17 new homes at Drumbear Wood in Monaghan were launched this morning. The development was carried out by Co-Operative Housing Ireland in conjunction with Monaghan County Council.
Speaking at the launch, Cllr David Maxwell highlighted the importance of the delivery of social housing locally. He said Monaghan County Council has delivered 140 new build homes to date.
Meanwhile, CHI's Director of Policy and Communications, Eoin Carroll said the organisation's key priority is to maximise the number of homes provided. He added that the project has been hugely successful in terms of creating a mixed development.
"There are 17 three-bed homes; 16 semi-detached and one detached home," he continued. "They are family homes that are well located and part of a mature and mixed development that is already here. While they are social houses, they are part of a mixed development with private renters and homeowners.
"It's great to have that mix and unlike what might have been traditional social housing, these houses all look very similar to the private homes as well."
Meanwhile, CHI Member tenant Olivia Johnson lives in Drumbear Wood with her family and is looking forward to building a community among the households. "It's important to me that we sustain what we've been given here as we grow as a community and the next generation is coming up," she said.
"I think CHI, and the co-operative values it is built off - in particular participation, concern for community, and co-operation - offer us the opportunity to nurture this sense of togetherness."
