Over 15,500 people aged 18 and over were still living with their parents in Cavan and Monaghan as of April 2022. That's according to CSO figures recently released.
In Monaghan, 7,072 adults, or 15 per cent of all those aged 18 and over in the county, were still living with their parents which is an increase of 441 or 7 per cent since 2016. While in Cavan , 8,455 adults, or 14 per cent of all those aged 18 and over in the county, were still living with their parents, an increase in Cavan of 1,337 or 19% since 2016.
Nationally, there were 522,486 adult children aged 18 years and above living with their parents which represents 13%. Overall, almost 25,000 adults living with their parents were unpaid carers. In Monaghan, 332 were unpaid carers and 383 in Cavan were unpaid carers which represents five per cent for both counties.
In 2022, 24 was the youngest age at which the majority of people nationally were not living with their parents. This was up from 23 in 2011. In Cavan and Monaghan this was 26 years. Of all adults living with their parents nationally in 2022, 57% were male. In Monaghan, 59 per cent were male and in Cavan that number was 58 per cent.
Just over one in six or 15 per cent of all adults in the Ballybay-Clones Local Electoral Area were living with their parents in April 2022, the highest rate in the county of Moangahan. While one in six or 16 per cent of all adults in the Ballyjamesduff Local Electoral Area were living with their parents in April 2022, the highest rate in Cavan.
