131 same sex marriages have been celebrated in the Northern Sound region since the introduction of the Marriage Equality Act in 2015. The referendum saw a majority of voters enshrine the right of same sex couples to marry in the eyes of the law.
In the last eight years, 131 LGBTQ+ couples in Cavan and Monaghan have tied the knot. Cavan saw the highest number with 89 couples saying I do, while the number was 42 in Monaghan.
The numbers were made of 75 male couples and 58 female couples marrying in the region according to figures recently released from the CSO. Nationally 2,806 same sex marriages have been celebrated across the country over the past eight years.
