13, that's the number of people who lost their lives in 2023 on roads across Cavan and Monaghan. 6 people died on Co Cavan roads during the last year while 7 lost their lives over the same period in Co Monaghan.
The highest number of road deaths in 10 years was recorded in 2023. A total of 184 people died in 173 fatal collisions in 2023 compared to 155 deaths in 149 collisions in 2022. This represents an increase of 29 deaths or a 19% rise in road deaths compared to last year.
Road Safety Authority's figures show the highest number of those killed were males at 78 percent while 22 percent of the deaths were females. Over a quarter of fatalities were aged 16-25 years, compared with 16% in 2022 with almost half of fatalities occurring between Friday and Sunday.
David Martin from the Road Safety Authority says nights and weekends, were the most dangerous times.
