Gardaí are issuing a renewed safety appeal after a tragic summer on Irish roads.
A three year old girl became the latest victim when she died after being hit by a car in Portlaoise yesterday afternoon.
It came less than 24 hours after a three year old boy and his grandparents were killed in a single-car collision in Cashel, County Tipperary.
Superintendent Liam Geraghty from the Garda Press Office is urging all road-users to never lose sight of the dangers involved:
“We’re definitely seeing an increase in road traffic collisions on our roads, not just this year, but last year, following on from what would be a reasonably good road safety record up to 2019 and 2020,” he said.
“At times, we take using our roads for granted, they are a dangerous place. “It is the most dangerous activity that any individual will do on any given day.”
So far this year, there have been 125 deaths on Irish roads so far this year.
