Almost 115,000 people left Emergency Departments last year including those attending the facility at Cavan General Hospital. That's according to figures released this week to Aontu. The party representative on Cavan County Council, Cllr Sarah O'Reilly, says there are major concerns over people who need treatment leaving and subsequently suffering 'life threatening' impacts as a result.
During yesterday's meeting of the local authority, Cllr O'Reilly received unanimous support when she called on Cavan County Council to write to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, and to the HSE in an effort to highlight to them how serious the situation has become.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr O'Reilly added that more investment is needed in frontline services and staff. "We all knew people were getting fed up and leaving A&Es but we didn't realise the extent of it.
"In the last five years, 10,000 people have left the emergency department at Cavan General Hospital without treatment. That just goes to show you the extent of the crisis; the overcrowding; and the over-stretched staff. There just needs to be more investment in frontline staff.
