The new Communications Minister says he won’t be ordering another review into the contentious North-South Interconnector project.
Eamon Ryan was asked about the project in the Dáil today where he said it’s expected to cost €230 million.
However, he said he didn’t know how much had been spent on the project so far but he said because work had been ongoing for almost two decades the cost would “not be insignificant”.
Local communities across Monaghan, Cavan and Meath are fiercely opposed to the project, which would see hundreds of pylons built to connect the electricity grids north and south.
However, Minister Ryan said today the interconnector is vital to protect the electricity supply on the island and a number of reports have shown undergrounding the project isn’t feasible.
