I am a friend of Archbishop Treanor's sister, Mary, and met this lovely, gentle man several times over the years. He treated every single person with humility, respect and compassion, and although he has been taken much too soon, he will be sitting at God's right hand now. He totally deserves his place in heaven. May he Rest in Peace.

I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of Mgr Noël Treanor and to the Irish Catholic Church, which gave the Church a great man who was committed to the idea of European unity. Between 2002-2005 I got to know the archbishop in the framework of COMECE, as a member of a think tank when we developed the document The Responsibility of Catholics and the Future of the European Union. Noël Treanor also invited me to his bishop’s ordination, and later hosted me and a priest friend of mine for a week at his bishop’s residence. He personally waited for us at the airport and introduced us to the ancient churches and natural beauties of Northern Ireland. He loved the Hungarians, his pectoral cross, which he received from Cardinal Rauber, is the work of the Hungarian goldsmith Csaba Ozsvári, who is waiting for the beatification process to begin. He remembered his friends personally, and when he ran into Hungarians, he always inquired about me. He also attended the meeting of the Hungarian Bishops’ Conference in 2006, which I was able to translate. The last time I was with him was in February, he arranged for me to research the issue of Christian unity in Malines and Leuven. We discussed that he will visit Hungary again next year. I was shocked by the news of his death. We have lost a friend and an exceptionally intelligent person. The influence of his personality and the conviction of his Christian faith live on in us.
